In the KLH War Room
19 April 2010 | By Dave in UncategorizedSome of the best teams, in or out of football, don’t look like much on paper. But sometimes teams get lucky and, despite the critics, find that winning chemistry.
Take the Dave & Carole show on ‘KLH as an example. Not a number one selection in the bunch, yet somehow we’ve managed to kick ass for 20+ years.
Let’s go inside the WKLH ‘War Room’ and break down the team. Oh yeah, I’ll try my best to use football lingo, if possible.
Me (I would say Dave but then I’d be speaking in the third person and Dave never talks in the third person ;~) I didn’t wow anyone at the combine and no one had high hopes for me. I just outworked and outlasted everyone. And, no, there’s no radio combine.
Carole…signed away from now defunct WBCS radio where she was doing traffic reports. A definite diamond in the rough, she surprised everyone by stepping into the starting lineup and making the radio Pro-Bowl. And, no, there’s no radio Pro-Bowl, either.
KB…came into the studio a few times as the weekly headliner at the Comedy Café. Smart, funny and just a little surly, he was signed as a free agent. Was once cut by the team by they soon realized they needed his intangibles. Master of the Bump and Run, KB is known in radio circles as a ‘game changer’.
Marcus Allen, our morning show producer was stolen away from our sister station. He was playing a different position but our scouts saw something in him and when we made the switch to the 3-4 we knew Marcus could be more than just a ‘plug the gap’ kind of player. No, there’s no radio 3-4 and there are no radio scouts.
Brandon is the young multi purpose back who is also a great special team player. Nope, there are no radio special teams, but there is IT and engineering.
Gino was signed by ‘KLH as a free agent and is known for his energy and great attitude. Gino’s an expert on the west coast offense.
John McGivern was signed as a free agent back in the early 90’s. As a former seminary student he excels at the Hail Mary. He’s also a Tight End that is an expert in the Crack-Back. John will now go and look those terms up to see what they mean.
Roz wasn’t even playing the game when we found her. Un-drafted out of Alabama, we found Roz sitting at the front desk. Our scouts liked her enthusiasm and knack for getting into the end zone. Roz has always enjoyed a Backfield in Motion.
Jason Wilde was an unknown player, at least to the ‘KLH audience, until he was signed a few years back while working for the Wisconsin State Journal. This former low round pick is now our Most Valuable Mouth Piece at 1265.
Mike Gousha is the former Pro-Bowler lured out of retirement. Mike offers us invaluable experience and insight.
So, there you go. A championship team made up mainly of free agents and low round picks. Well, that’s not entirely true. See, we do have LeRoy Butler on our Morning ‘KLH team. LeRoy WAS a FIRST ROUND PICK and this Friday he’ll stop by our Workforce Tour broadcast to talk about the NFL draft. Tune in and see what #36 has to say…
