Dave Gets Inked

August 18th, 2009 | By Dave in Uncategorized | 8 Comments »

All of my kids have them and I’ve always wanted one, so I got a tattoo. Cindy and I went to Las Vegas to visit our son Dan who lives out there. He took me to Hart and Huntington inside the Hard Rock, Vegas. Since I’ve been on the radio since I was 17, I wanted a microphone and I also wanted to have my name inked on my arm with a horsheshoe for the “U”. My nickname in HS was “Luck” and everyone I’ve ever met has told me I have a horseshoe up my a**.

Blanco is the guy who tattooed me and he added the musical notes to signify Classic Rock. Once Blanco drew it up, it took about 3 hours to ink me up. One of my kids told me, “It’s a mile to your first tattoo and only a couple of steps to your second”. I think he might be right ;~)

By The Time We Got to Woodstock…

August 14th, 2009 | By Dave in Uncategorized | No Comments »

I wrote this a few months back, but since the anniversary is now officially upon us, here is my Woodstock story;

It was August 1969, and I was 10 years old. My Mom and Dad each took off of work for a week and the three of us headed off on a vacation. When you grow up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there are a few obvious vacation destinations; the Jersey shore, Niagara Falls and the Pocono Mountains. In ‘69, my Dad decided that we would drive to the Pocono’s. Dad was a decorated WW II veteran who fought in Gen. Patton’s Army and still sported his crew cut. So off we drove in Dad’s 1967 Pontiac to the Pocono’s. About an hour outside of our destination we started to see them. They were walking alongside the highway. Some of them were camping on the hillsides. We had never seen them up close and personal. Traffic was slowed almost to a halt while everyone gawked. What were they? They were (dramatic pause) “hippies!” Yep, little did we know that about 60 miles from our hotel a little music festival called Woodstock was about to begin? And now, after all this time, almost 40 years later, someone has interpreted one of the seminal moments of this legendary music festival. Cut and paste the link and enjoy:

Mike on the Mic

August 12th, 2009 | By Dave in Uncategorized | 5 Comments »

Working for a media company is, in many ways, like working for a professional sports team. There’s management that puts the team together, and we, the players, form a bond, develop chemistry, and “hit the field” together. In our case, “the field” is WKLH 96.5 FM, where the Dave & Carole morning show has been playing for the better part of twenty five years.

And, just like in professional sports, morning show players come and go. There’s never any one set reason why. Mr. Angry left ‘KLH of his own accord to raise his family and focus on his business. From ’87-’92 there was Paul Molitor speaking to us weekly, then he signed with another team Mike Holmgren (’92-’98) left for the Northwest and Bax (“Itchy”) moved on to get his own show at a sister station. And, of course, Matt Vasgersian, who even went on live remotes with us to Vegas and Munich , left for bigger and better things. How about Gino Salamone? A GREAT free agent pick up for us after his last team was “disbanded”.

Now,  FOX 6’s Ted Perry, the man we simply call “The Anchorman”. As you may or may not know, the Milwaukee Radio Group (which includes our four Milwaukee sister stations, as well as ‘KLH) has entered into an agreement with WISN 12 to provide weather, sports, school closing info, breaking news, traffic emergency info, web video and more. In addition, FOX6 has just signed on with another radio group in town to do the same for them. And while we sincerely tried to hang on to “Teddy P.” well, it wasn’t to be. So we wish him the very best and he will always be a part of our “KLH Morning Show Ring of Honor”.

But, as I said, this IS sort of like a pro sports team. We have signed a BIG NAME  to add to our morning show cast. Mike Gousha has officially joined the ‘KLH Morning show. Mike’s credentials as a journalist are well documented. Mike hosts UPFRONT, a weekly show on WISN 12, and he also serves as a Distinguished Fellow in Law and Public Policy at Marquette University Law School. Mike told us it’s quite a fancy title for a guy who “wore makeup and read out loud” for most of his life. Oddly enough,those same qualities, along with sharp wit and great stories, are what make great radio. You can hear Mike every Monday morning at 9:05 on ‘KLH. We welcome him to our cast of characters.

QUESTIONS ABOUT CLUNKING

August 3rd, 2009 | By Dave in Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

Dave’s Cash for Clunkers Questions;

1. We borrow money we don’t have to give to people so they can borrow more money they don’t have to buy a new car. I only took Econ 101 but I think this is how we got here in the first place, isn’t it?

2. Wouldn’t these old cars be off the road soon anyway?

3. Doesn’t this hurt the used car market, as well as the spare parts market and the auto repair market?

4. Aren’t new car insurance premiums higher? Is it possible that the reason people are driving older cars that get bad gas mileage is because they can’t afford anything else? Now, they also get hit with higher insurance costs.

5. It might create more demand now, but what happens in the next year or two? Do we then have Cash for Clunkers pt. 2, The Hatchback Strikes Back?

6. Am I wrong to think that maybe some of the folks driving those clunkers can’t really afford a new car and are only going deeper into debt?

7. Has anyone asked Bart Starr how he feels about this? I seem to remember the legendary Packer asking us to donate our old cars to the Rawhide Boy’s Ranch. How has this impacted charities that rely on donations like that?

8. True, demand is up for new cars, but Edmunds.com noted that over 100,000 buyers put purchases on hold waiting for the program to launch. So, does that mean we are rewarding people who were already going to buy a new car?

9. How about the Law of Unintended consequences?
Used Clunkers just went up by $4,500. Buying a car for your teenager just got way more costly, didn’t it?

10. Finally, have you seen a video of how they trash the clunker? If not, just click on the link;
